the symbolism, the climax, the ending, this screams socratic seminar
While you only see the poor walking "down" the stairs.
Very subtle but profound symbolism.
Thanks for the likes😘
Jessica was fit to be in a rich family. She faked like DaSung being smart and artsy, and was the only one who could control and understand him.
The pizza delivery girl said that one out 4 boxes are defective..there were 4 members in the family and one got rejected/removed in the end
Park's daughter (Da-hye) is disconnected from her rich family. We see very less of her with her parents, calls her little brother an imposter and so on. And it becomes evident, when her mother doesn't offer her noodles which results into a quarrel between the two.
This strangely correlates to the 'smell' objection of the Park family. Da-hye is the only one who hasn't complained in the movie about 'smell'. Her father, mother and brother, all three at sometime in the movie have complained or got disgusted by the smell of poor people. On the contrary, she fell in love with Ki-woo (Kevin).
Edit: ....and Parasite Just won Best Picture and it absolutely deserves it. Definitely one of the best films I've seen the past couple years
There's one thing that I've noticed : when Jessica/Ki-Jung is stabbed at the end, her death is messy. It's bloody, she says that she's hurting several times, and it takes a while before she exhales her last breath. Even then, the richest class doesn't care about her death ; nobody, except her family, cares about her. Everyone is focused on fleeing or on Da-Song having a new seizure.
But when the Parks' father is stabbed, his death is "clean", almost peaceful. It happens almost instantaneously, there's no blood and he falls slowly as if he's falling asleep. Of course, it triggers much more reactions in the onlookers.
This moment just... spoke to me. I remembered Kim's father, Ki-Taek, saying that money is like an iron creasing out the edges of life, making it easier and more beautiful.
Thus, Park's death is easy, quick, smooth, while Jessica struggles in her very last moments.
I thought of media, turning a blind eye to atrocities happening in the lower classes, but documenting (which actually happens in the movie) things happening in the upper classes, smoothing out the edges, making it more manageable for the public, manipulating the way we perceive things.
I'm probably looking too much into it, but who knows?
Thank you for reading 💙
Ending: son plans out rescuing his dad
I suddenly thought of this quote while watching this.
" no, she's is nice because she's is rich”
Thanks for so many like 😄🙏
Her mom and dad didn't cared about their employees but the girl picked him on back and basically saved his life
I just don't know what to make of this

Thank you everyone for answering this question to such great details
Each answer is correct in their own point of view
But I would like to believe that new generation does not demarcate between rich and poor and believe that every human life is equally important ✌🏻
1. I should treat people with respect
2. I've got a lot of good things going for me
3. Strive to understand people
4. Help those who are in need
5. Anyone can be a villain.
The WiFi connectivity issue shown in the beginning of the film comes full circle in the end.
In the beginning, the family couldn't get their messages across i.e no communication.
In the end, the father has no means of knowing whether his message will be received by his son, and the son has no means to deliver his message to his father.
Let's focus on the names of the poors.
1. Ki-Jung(Daughter)
Definition in Korean: Things that already happened or determined(기정)
-> So she's the only dead person among the family.
2. Ki-woo(Son)
Definition in Korean: Meaningless worries(기우)
-> All the plans he planned in the last scene would never gonna happen. Even though he plans the most, nothing can be realized in the long run.
I agree with most of your analysis, however this fact is conveniently overlooked. I think this part was included intentionally by the story teller to remind us that this is not simply about the rich being bad. In fact they are not really evil. Spoiled, ignorant, and unsympathetic but not evil. It is important to note Da-Hye's action here because she is the most likeable of all the Parks. We never see her really complain about the smell of the Kims unlike the rest of the family members are. In fact, she does fall for Ki Woo and this is a positive thing to note. Argue all you want that Mr. Park is a coward and a bit of a dick who showed no concern at all for the other lives that were more at danger, but her daughter is not like that.
The bottomline is this. The real villain here is the system and not necessarily the people. How we act, and how we view each other is largely dependent on the societal and cultural structures that we live in. If you are rich you are in a position to not give a shit about the poor. Not because you are evil, but because you do not have to take the subway, or labor manually like they do. If you are poor, you will sometimes have to cannibalize your own kind. Again not because you are evil, but because it is a way for you to survive.
Imagine that the Parks are these people who can afford the latest iPhone. Now most of them will think of how cool apple products are. Or how genius Steven Jobs is. But at the same time be completely naive of the sub-human standard working conditions that assembled these gadgets. Da-hye is simply one of them who read about it on the news and did give a shit.
So she died where she truly belonged. ❤️
It got way past that.
When Park's daughter asks Kevin about Jessica and suggests that he may be her boyfriend, he immediately denies and seems kinda nervous about it, making a whole story about meeting Jessica for the first time that day. When comparing both of the girls with flowers, Park's daughter checks Kevin's pulse on his wrist, just like he did on their first class. She then remembers what he had told her about the "heart never lying" thing and leans for a kiss, mistaking his fast pulse for feelings. What I really think is, that his fast pulse is not because he has feelings for her but the fact that he's been lying from the start and feels constantly nervous and pressured on not being caught
So I’ve seen a comment talking about how there was a parallel between the beginning of the movie and the ending since when ki-woo’s friend brings the "rock" that’s supposed to bring good luck to the family the mother says "u could’ve brought food instead" and at the end ki-woo brought the rock to the basement instead of food which was what Jessica was supposed to bring.
But what if this was all a metaphor in order to criticize the Korean society.
I think Bong Joon Ho made this parallel in order to say "stop giving us superstitions, prayers and wishing us good luck and give us solutions or money, food"
The stone is pretty important throughout the movie to ki-woo he keeps it when their basement is flooded and when all the victims are sleeping after the flooding he still holds it tight and doesn’t let go of it.
But at the end this stone which was supposed to bring them good luck and blessings only ended up killing them (metaphorically and literally) cause this stone is the main factor of all the tragedies that happened at the birthday party (ki-woo drops it, the man in the basement takes it, hits ki-woo in the head with it and goes upstairs and kills Jessica etc...)
None of this would have happened if ki-woo left the stone alone.
So I think the main message is superstitions ironically ends up killing the poor since poor people are actually the most superstitious which does nothing for them.
Ps: it’s very long and I’m so sorry if it’s confusing English isn’t my first language.
From a different perspective, even the Parks are somewhat of a parasite because they feed off of the hard work of the lower class workers while reaping all the benefits.
In the first bunker basement scene, the old maid says she still texts Dasong (boy) and that is how she knew the Park’s were out camping. It is the boy who insisted to stay at the camp ground in the heavy rain because Dasong knew the old maid was going to retrieve some stuff at the house. When the Park’s had to leave the campsite Dasong insists on having Jjappaguri (ramdon) so the mom will call home in order to give heads up for the old maid to get out of the house. My two more cents on Dasong is that he represents the young generation of today who know the plea of the less fortunate people. Dasong sees the light flickering and sees the “HELP!” sent by the man in the basement. Like the young generation of this day Dasong does not have the money or the power to save such people. It is ironic because it is the young generation who feel such empathy but they do not have the means to save the poor. But when they have family of their own, they are too busy pursuing the American dream of capitalism. I am all for capitalism yet, hope and dream for the rich to have socialistic hearts to help the needy.
Its not only until it is too late, when he stabs Jessica, do the rich people notice, it is only until their convenience is turned into inconvenience, the shattering of their safe hierachal bubble, do they finally take notice and acknowledge the poor ghost/man.
Wow
I can’t remember the scenes exactly but if anyone has any more information feel free to tell me.
Spend also 2 hours for mining gold from comment section.
" Icing on cake "
When Mr Kim is trying to convince Mrs Park that the old maid has TB... Jessica is the one who suggests “If you get the chance the hot sauce(pizza sauce) will be icing on the cake" Mr kim uses and Mrs park is confirmed about the tb thing
Then later Mrs park narrates the story about the ghost in which she tells that her son kept thinking about the cake because he loved (particularly) the icing on that cake - the reason he discovered the ghost
In the end we see that Jessica is asked to carry the cake that has the same icing as before and when the ghost guy stabs she slams the cake on his bloody face leaving half his face stained with blood and half with icing "
That is the reason the pizza scene is so important
The proverb icing on the cake means an attractive but unimportant addition ...
The icing probably represents the temptations that led to their downfall..
Not only that, but the son doesn't even want it. The poor mom cooks a meal that she would have loved to serve her own kids, just for someone else's child to reject it entirely. The rich mom eats it instead, maybe symbolising that the things she does for her son are more for HER benefit (i.e. inviting HER friends to his birthday party).
At the scene where the families were fighting to get a hold of the phone with the video, the 3 dogs from the Park family came in from the background. While they were fighting the dogs went about their way and ate up the scraps on the floor. Even the dogs of the rich profit from the strife of the less fortunate and were oblivious to the struggles that were taking place
Bong: “no I’m not”

me: that bday cake looked so good
Sorry for my bad english...
Now here’s the thing, I live in Maryland in the US. We have stink bugs heavily here. And stink bugs are chill, they just do their thing, unless you piss them off. Then they release their horrid smell upon you, or fly in your face. Like the rage of the poor families in the movie at the end.
Also, this is strange but I’ve never had a stink bug get into my room before, until last night when I started this movie. One was flying around my room and crawling up my wall.
Edit: Thanks for all the appreciation guys, glad you found my theory interesting!!
When the poor son said to rich daughter that - do you think he fits in, and says he would go down. She says that - down there in the lawn? He says- lower. What he meant was his life and poverty would degrade further- and it did happen, he lost his sister and father trapped in the basement. He went down-hole further.
1) best picture
2) best foreign language Film
3) best director
4)best original screenplay
- the moral lesson I learned from this movie
Hats off to the director and his team.
Im so amazed by the comment section damnnn this movie is so deep
And the internet connectivity at the park house which is still available even at the basement shows the rich has to do small hard work to get success
This is pure gold
Not only in Jessica's death scene but also in other scenes we see the same thing. The basement guy is dying but he smiles and says RESPECT to house owner. When Kiwoo wakes up in hospital and finds out he has been arrested or when he finds out his sister has died of bleeding, he still laughs. Have you seen Joker 2019? It's also about poverty and gap between the rich and poor. Joker also has nonstop laughter in hard and traumatic situations like when others make fun of him or when they bother him. Sometimes laughter is not because of joy, it's from a deep pain.. Its because of a misery which makes someone speechless and so done with whole life and existence...
Different interpretations by different citizens with their own talent.
Comments are more interesting than the video.
epic..
Do you remember how the house wife told Jessica she would be the highlight of the party? Like literally she died.
Another thing right at the beginning when the son und his father poured water on the drunk guy, Jessica hold up her phone and points it right at them saying (at least the german subtitles) : "flood"
A foreshadowing to the flood later on
Also the psycho in the basement told in one shot that the former housekeeper that the only thing he got is love. When she died he totally lost it and turned to a massmurderer
That scene was something else
When the father was asked what's the next plan after they were found out, he said "a plan that never fails, is no plan at all"
Felt like that was such a powerful take away because when they went ahead with no plan, unlike before, everything just crumbled. You see the regret on the father's face when their act fell apart, his daughter got killed and son injured (thought he was a goner for sure but his "lucky stone" saved him). It was such a meaningful take away for me because this just showed how having no plan and taking shortcuts can also lead to failure, then literally ending the movie with his son putting together a full fledged plan on how he should start over until he reaches success. Such a good movie!
And in the end he was nearly killed by that stone
So in a way if he didn't carry the stone none of it would have happened
The rock doesn't sink when flood came in why? Well that's the reality
The rock sinks in the river why? Well that scene happen when he is dreaming about to get rich and buy a house for his dad
I wonder how she felt after discovering the true identity of her boyfriend and that he basically indirectly caused the death of her father.
Koreans have subtle lines that they understand.
When he first describe madam, he said "Young and Simple" and then
subtitle "I had fun there"
but It can be interpreted as a double meaning.
"Yeah...I liked her".
This is not a simple description, but it can be taken as a meaning of reminiscing about happy moments in the past.
and during the tutor interview, Madame said, "I was very satisfied."
After tutoring, she paid more money because "inflation"
But in fact, the money is taken out of the envelope and paid.
that mean she paid "additional salary" to former tutor
At the party, Mrs. Kim chose to have Jessica bring out the cake to DaSung when normally you'd expect DaHye, the family's daughter, to be chosen for the special role in the oh so special party.
But of course she's also the only Kim who got stabbed to death while the cake was in her hand and still, none of the rich cared after all.
Son realized from father's mistake
And for everyone in this comment section, I love you, you are geniuses.
I feel there a theme coming out here is how plans can rise or fall based on the class you are born in. While the Parks seemed to be in control of the plans they had and made, the plans of the Kims literally kept taking them further down than they were before. The only plan that seemed to work was at the end when the dad finally knew what he had to do - go into the basement.
I think this really sums up the sad reality of what goes on in the world today. For a lot of people, their plans never seem to work. Partly because they don't have plans or because their plans get drowned by the system. At the end of the day the plan that seems to work out for most - is staying where they are, or going further down ultimately hiding from the world, robbing the world of ever seeing the true greatness they have.
