I’m Korean and a lot of people in Korea talked about how unpleasant and uncomfortable they felt after watching this movie and that’s why they didn’t like it so much. I think it’s because this movie brought up the fact and the reality that no one actually wants to face. Sometimes the reality can be very harsh but that doesn’t mean we can always put it aside. I’m glad Mr.bong made this movie and gave us food for thought while everyone just watches just fun/exciting stories that most of people can’t relate.

BY FAR the scariest scene to me is when the old housekeeper is running down the stairs and calling out "Honey!" and we have no idea what's down there. While the Kim's are following we're thinking about someone who is dead or nearly dead down there. That scene breaks all the trust that we had, along with the Kim's, that they were in control.

DaHye was fitted to be in a poor family. She didn’t mind the smell and when she found his boyfriend on the ground she carried him to the entrance (and possibly took him to the hospital) even if he weighted more than her, even if it was a burden, she lifted him up.
Jessica was fit to be in a rich family. She faked like DaSung being smart and artsy, and was the only one who could control and understand him.

The saddest, most mindblowing aspect of the movie is towards the end, where the son writes to his dad starting with “I have a plan..” and proceeds to elaborating his plans on getting his dad out. But more than halfway through the movie they had a conversation at the evacuation center where the father gave him only one advice: “Only one plan ever works out: no plan at all.” And that hit me in the saddest way because we know the son will be working really hard and will be planning hard to get his father out but we know that his dad was right. His plan will never work out.

I’ve seen so many comments saying how all of this could have been avoided if they hadn’t let the old housekeeper in, but why isn’t anyone talking about how if they’d agreed to keep the housekeeper’s husband a secret + leave him food every two days, things would have worked out fine? The Ki family became everything they deplored. Chong-Sook found herself in a position of higher wealth & status than the old housekeeper, yet didn’t live up to her promise of ‘being nicer’ should she have found herself in that position. She was insistent on reporting the old housekeeper to the police. That was her choice. Wealth is the parasite.

There's one thing that I've noticed : when Jessica/Ki-Jung is stabbed at the end, her death is messy. It's bloody, she says that she's hurting several times, and it takes a while before she exhales her last breath. Even then, the richest class doesn't care about her death ; nobody, except her family, cares about her. Everyone is focused on fleeing or on Da-Song having a new seizure.
But when the Parks' father is stabbed, his death is "clean", almost peaceful. It happens almost instantaneously, there's no blood and he falls slowly as if he's falling asleep. Of course, it triggers much more reactions in the onlookers.
This moment just... spoke to me. I remembered Kim's father, Ki-Taek, saying that money is like an iron creasing out the edges of life, making it easier and more beautiful.
Thus, Park's death is easy, quick, smooth, while Jessica struggles in her very last moments.
I thought of media, turning a blind eye to atrocities happening in the lower classes, but documenting (which actually happens in the movie) things happening in the upper classes, smoothing out the edges, making it more manageable for the public, manipulating the way we perceive things.
I'm probably looking too much into it, but who knows?

When the basement man says, "Respect!" to the wealthy father even as he's dying and being ignored, I thought of how billionaires are idolized and respected by society. The reality is that billionaires are exploiting the rest of us. The wealth gap is continuously increasing. The top 0.1% own 90% of the wealth. The middle class is shrinking and we're fighting each other for the scraps, just like the Kims and the Guks. Depressing.

I love the part where the rich kid's "toy" tent is so durable and MADE IN USA (lol..) that he can hang out in it and casually spend the night when the weather is pouring outside. Meanwhile, the poor people who have "real" homes, at the bottom of society, get their only homes ripped apart from the same pouring rain.

This movie is incredible. I think my favourite scene is when the dad and the son are talking about plans, and the dad tells the son that they don't matter because they never come true. Great small scene that I think beautifully encapsulates the themes of this movie.

I love this deep analysis, but i feel like you could have explained more about the “line” that Mr. Park keeps mentioning, and how the smell from the lower classes keeps crossing over. I think this is especially important, because even though Mr. Kim tries his best to suit the wealthy environment by cleaning himself and wearing neater attire compared to the unemployed version of his prior self, the scent from that semi-underground apartment living clings on to him. And Mr. Park’s critique of this smell acknowledges Mr. Kim that he will be a lower class no matter what.

No protagonists here. No happy ending for any one of them. They were all parasites in their own way... They all had such “fatal flaws”. The father depended on his children from coaching him to getting him a job. The mother refused to help Moon gwang even when they themselves were lying. “Jessica” faked everything from art therapy to certificates. The son made his move on the girl even after his friend who helped him get this job made it clear he liked her and the family trusted him to be with her. The rich father didn’t love his wife and hated the smell of the poor, the rich wife was completely clueless and enabled everything, the rich son was always inappropriate and the rich daughter was the only one that was not so flawed but didn’t really seem to have her priorities straight either. Every time something happened in the plot it was based on a lie. It was a house of cards that could not stand, and as soon as the rain came it washed it all away. I find this a morality tale about the perils of lying and fakery, no matter the class. It can’t last, and the shadow, whatever is lying in the basement, the unknown, will always creep out into the light and bring chaos and destruction.

It's very interesting that the Park family does not act out of evil beliefs or are particularly greedy like in some anti capitalist movies, they even pay their staff appropriately and are very polite. The poverty and struggles of the working class is just out of their sight and that explains the cultural problem of the growing wealth gap pretty well.

The reason Jessica's character is most liked in the film is because it is basically everyone in the society with unique and tremendous potential to succeed on their own but gives up and joins the flow of the majority due to the poor and negative circumstances of the surroundings.

Y'all! just realized why Da Song liked Jessica when in fact all of his previous teachers can't handle him. Dahye mentioned that Da Song was just pretending to be 'smart' 'artistic' or any at that matter and he liked Jessica for the same reason that Jessica was also pretending to be 'smart' and 'artistic'. So at some point they understand each other very well. Birds with the same feather flock together indeed.

Did anyone else figure that the old housekeeper was beat up because of the loan sharks who were trying to kill her husband trying to get him out of hiding from under the Park’s home? That’s why she had the cut on her lip and bruises before entering the house, and why she was so desperate to check on her husband so late at night. Sad that her rushing to protecting her husband and their livlihoods was her downfall (pun somewhat intended).

The ending of Parasite is literally what the title suggested; a parasite that is embedded within a host will kill the host eventually. This movie can be interpreted in many different ways (literally, figuratively, metaphorically) and it still will make sense. It is a masterpiece of a masterpiece.

Another amazing detail is that the sex scene is not there so that the movie has a sex scene. As many people watched the movie with their friends and families, the sex scene was to make us feel the discomfort and awkwardness just like the Kim's family hiding under the table and how we wanted that situation/scene to end as soon as possible.

Why is everyone overlooking the fact that Da-Hye saved Ki-Woo (Kevin)? Being a petitte young girl she literally carries Ki-Woo on her back and had she not done that, Ki-Woo would have surely bled to death.

The symbolism behind Jessica's death in the rich house is that she's the only one who sincerely fits into the rich lifestyle and mindset. Like her brother says to her earlier in the film "You are the only one who really fits in this house."

I have an observation to add, i noticed that the little boy (dasong) saw the lights flickering, and he knew it was morse code and unlocked the meaning but still chose to ignore it. i think it’s an analogy how people in general not just the rich, especially the young people choose to ignore important messages just because it’s out their comfort zone. Dasong didn’t tell his parents about maybe because it was raining and he didn’t want to get wet meaning young people don’t want to get their hands dirty because it’s not convenient. But what if this was all a metaphor in order to criticize the Korean society.

It captures how society views the wealth success with respect, but in return the wealthy doesn’t know the collective society as individuals. I drew a similarity from the scenes, when Park doesn't even care about Jessica when she was stabbed and left to die and was asking for the keys to car and similarly during the flood a guy with a bicycle asked Kim to help him to get out, but kim simply neglects and proceeds to his house, rich or poor, people are selfish and care only about themselves or look out for the welfare of their family.

One thing I noticed is that at the end in Kevin’s “dream”, when the rock is returned to the river, it blends perfectly in with the other rocks. This could symbolize Kevin’s idea of blending in with the rich. It makes sense for me especially after he asks Da-hye if he’d fit in with people at the party.

Parasite was the perfect title for this movie. Everyone is a parasite. The Kims are the "classic" parasites slowly infiltrating the host (Parks). The basement dude and wife were parasites too feeding off of the original architect owner and feeding off the new host, which was the Parks, for years until a stronger parasite takes over (Kims). Almost like a battle of parasites (lower class battles) to maintain their hierarchy.
From a different perspective, even the Parks are somewhat of a parasite because they feed off of the hard work of the lower class workers while reaping all the benefits.

In the first bunker basement scene, the old maid says she still texts Dasong (boy) and that is how she knew the Park’s were out camping. It is the boy who insisted to stay at the camp ground in the heavy rain because Dasong knew the old maid was going to retrieve some stuff at the house. When the Park’s had to leave the campsite Dasong insists on having Jjappaguri (ramdon) so the mom will call home in order to give heads up for the old maid to get out of the house. My two more cents on Dasong is that he represents the young generation of today who know the plea of the less fortunate people. Dasong sees the light flickering and sees the “HELP!” sent by the man in the basement. Like the young generation of this day Dasong does not have the money or the power to save such people. It is ironic because it is the young generation who feel such empathy but they do not have the means to save the poor. But when they have family of their own, they are too busy pursuing the American dream of capitalism. I am all for capitalism yet, hope and dream for the rich to have socialistic hearts to help the needy.

WOW I just noticed a small detail - notice how the ghost/man was allowed to freely walk from the basement to the garden of the house without a single person noticing him - even when he gets to the garden, with the knife in his hand, the rich are all facing the opposite way, turning a blind eye to the poor ghost/man that now stands amongst them - even the rich girl (Park's daughter) is seen walking downstairs and looking facing the garden door seconds after the ghost/man enters the garden and yet even then she doesnt see him

8 months later but I made a small discovery: In the scene when they’re all eating their hearts out at the buffet, the daughter asks her dad where he used to work, and she’s surprised that he used to do all these odd jobs but then he replies “After the bakery went out of business I had to” flash forward later when they’re all in the basement, the man who’s been living there said his bakery foreclosed, and him and his wife ended up taking out loans with the “loan sharks”. I don’t think that was a coincidence !! I think they’re father worked at the SAME small business, once again drawing a parallel between the two families!

The main part that made me scream of frustrated is when they found the maid's husband in basement. They could have reach an agreement to keep each other's secret but the mom was so being so good of herself that she threaten the maid to call the police. Something small that I liked about this movie was how the poor family turned in to "proper" workers in a second, not looking at all like how they did when they did not have a job. The same happens when the "proper" housemaid comes back to the house looking like a homeless person. It shows that the poor are not so different from the middle-class or rich after all, they just don't have the luxury to care for themselves.

This comment section is actual gold. i too had a mind boggling discovery. that scene when the exterminator comes and the father tells the family to leave the windows open for 'free extermination' for bugs/parasites but has absolutely no difficulty in working through that gas while the others cough.....later he becomes the parasite in the park's house. symbolising he's the parasite that they now can not get rid of, for he is immune to the posion. he can not be gotten rid of. partly because the rich don't even know he is there

It's important that it's "Jessica" who dies because what she represents to the Parks is the middle class. They think she is an expert with professional degrees and experience, who can demand a higher salary. She's the one who is initially invited to the party and the family is quite social with her. They still don't care about her bleeding out in front of them at all. In other words even if Ki-Woo and Ki-Jung got to university, got the degrees and jobs they are obviously intelligent enough to excel at their lives would still be worthless compared to the parks. Even if they climbed as high as they could climb they'd still be worth nothing from the perspective of the rich.

There's a scene in the semi-basement neighborhood with a Korean flag displayed outside. It shows how the working class poor cling on to a false sense of achievement through patriotic sentiment, while they themselves continue to live in squander and get none of the benefit from their nation's achievements. Whereas the wealthy Park family couldn't care less about their Korean heritage and indulge in Western culture. This is hard to spot, but I think it's there, because Korean households generally don't display the flag at their homes unless it is a national holiday.

i love the parallel in the movie. when in the beginning of the movie, the Kim's family was eating stale bread that has bug (parasite) on it, and at the end of the movie in the scene of the party (15:03 on this video), the rich people white bread has their employees blood on it, which is their parasite. The scene when the wife and husband start fooling around the husband mentions the "cheap panties". They called the driver a pervert for it but they are what they condemn. The wife also tells him "give me drugs" (or something along those lines). They mention drugs with a sexual fantasy but condemn the poor just because they assume they use it. The poor are the ones that suffer from the effects of drugs while the rich can use it for fun and fantasies.

I see many are saying that the sons painting is of the maid's husband/ghost in the basement so, some may say this is a stretch but - if you go back and look at the painting again you a see a man (most likely the man in the basement) then we see an arrow pointing upwards symbolising the man coming up the stairs from the basement into the Park’s reality at the garden party. At the bottom of the arrow there is a triangle which could be seen as the teepee which was set up in the yard⛺️ there is a bright sun and blue sky in the picture, something that in the movie was heavily referenced after the rainfall! So the whole picture foreshadowed the massacre at the ending! Call me crazy!

One thing I noticed was how when the Kims were getting drunk in the Parks' house, Ki-woo said that he's going to ask Da-hye out when he's in university. This dialogue is a repeat of Min's (Ki-woo's 'upper class' friend that gave them the stone) at the beginning of the movie, which might indicate that Ki-woo now sees himself at the same level as Min, not inferior like he stated at the beginning scene.

I feel like the rock represents a false sense of hope. The rock was suppose to bring them material wealth as a gift. At first the family was making a significant amount of money, but soon their house and plan was totally ruined. Also the fact that the rock floated means it’s fake bc rocks don’t float. And the son keeps clinging to the rock because he thinks it will bring him fortune. Also, the rock ends up almost killing the son when it slams on his head. Showing he was hit by reality. Lastly, the ending where they show the future of him supposedly buying the house gives him hope, but is impossible bc it will take him a life time to make enough money.

5:30 you actually missed one of the most important scenes or I would say THE most important scene in the whole movie where Mr park was explaining Kim about the whole birthday play and the roles they need to play and Kim starts to "cross the line" by saying "your wife likes sudden parties right?", "you truly love your wife" showing his irritation and disdain for the party and all the fuss about it when he is going through toughest hardships, and Mr park starts to get irked by it and says "you're being paid extra, so treat it as work", and this scene sets Kim's resentment in stone and also shows how for the rich and upper-class human labor is just transactional and all the blood and sweat of the working class is counted in money and nothing more while working-class is always expected by the rich to be eternally grateful to them for their "favor", this shows how the wealth gap has reduced the working class to be less human and just transactional labor where money is used by the rich to sidestep all their concerns and human hardships and use their labor to satisfy even the most trivial of their needs.

It's ironic how Kevin during the scene in their flooded home and shelter, he hugged the stone so much. His father even asked him about it and he says that there's something the stone seems to cling to him so dearly and it's the same stone that almost put him into death. That was the most striking scene for me. For me it represents the reality that sometimes that things that we cling on so dearly might also be the things that will harm us eventually. He holds on to that "false hope" or the stone that it also was used against him.

I think that the Kim's were accepting of their poor status and just wanted to gain more money to improve their life's quality, all except the son. He believed that his 'poor' life was just a transient phase into him rising to his place among the 'rich'. That is portrayed by the entire family verging on 'the line' but never actually crossing it, except for the son, who crossed it twice. The first time was when the Kim's were pretending to be rich while the Park's where away camping and the son chose to cross the 'line' and lay in the sun while his entire family stayed in the shadows. His parents warned him of getting burned, but he just said that it was amazing. The second time was when the son was standing with the rich daughter gazing down at the party, it showed him being perplexed between his poor self (his reflection in the glass at one side of the line) and his rich self (him actually standing next to his rich girlfriend, both on the other side of the line) and when he was finally ready to rise above and let go of his poor image (portrayed by him handing down the stone to the more needy man in the basement, thus assuming his position among the rich), it backfired and ended up burning his family like his parents had warned him before.

I love this comment section but I have a question. Did anyone notice that on the wall of the Kim's basement apartment there was an Olympic silver medal next to a picture of Mrs. Kim playing tennis? Also, how did Ki-woo and Min know each other? They're supposed to be classmates but it just surprises me that they went to the same school because of the social class difference. Just saw the movie so a bit late to the party. However, now I realize this is also saying that this is a cycle and will continue. How the dad said another rich oblivious family moved into the house, they’re just like the Parks. The father replaced the last man, and as the son goes off to university like Min. This leaves the mother in a situation she needs a job, she could (after finding out her husband is still alive) try to see if the new homeowners need a housekeeper and the cycle of poverty repeats. Jessica is shown to have tremendous potential and she's also said to 'fit in,' with the rich, rosy existence of the Park's. In the end, it was the man who was living in the lowest place and was bound by his extreme poverty (debt to loan sharks) that killed her. This can go to show how her promise and capabilities were quite literally 'killed/murdered' by poverty and lack of opportunities.

I just realized something—during the flood, the son stared at the rock that the rich friend gave him because he realized that it was fake when it floated. However, he still felt like the rock “clung to him” and carried it around because even when he knew there was no hope he still valued the rock and couldn’t help but lie to himself. When the dad told him that he didn’t have a plan because plans don’t work out in the end, he went down to the basement with the rock to give to them because they didn’t know it was fake and could still have hope. So the fake rock symbolizes lost hope. I know that was long and no ones probably gonna see this anyway but yeah haha

I’m surprised the part where the rich girl carried kevin’s unconscious body wasn’t mentioned. I didn’t care much for their romantic relationship and even scoffed at her cause they like, what, knew each other for 2-3 days and then kissed? What is this? A disney princess? I even thought maybe she was just a stereotypical flirty high-schooler that flirted with all her tutors. Was expecting her to have ran out screaming and panicking when she found his bleeding body. Just done rewatching it and realize, when the scene of the Kim son holding his stone to hit the man who is peeing outside their window it become vice versa. He was the one who was hit by a stone.

I've been though most of the comment section and I just thought I'd mention some small things not yet mentioned: Earlier in the film the son from the poor family said they'd have to hire actors if they got married in real life. At the party scene in the end, all the rich people just seem fake too and run away when all the families (especially the rich family) are seriously injured. Also there is huge contrast between how everyone is dressed. Their clothes look perfect wheras the poor families' look "CREASED" and brown. As stated by the poor son, he doesn't fit in at the party...

All that art shit she said about her son to his mom which she actually Google was more about true. Her son was actually drawing his trauma , the face in his artwork resembled that man who lived in the basement.

I noticed that when mr Kim was hiding under the table, the parks were talking about his smell and he seemed upset and smelt himself. Then when the basement man is stabbed Mr park smells him and runs away then Mr Kim stabs him. I feel like these are connected somehow.

This movie is an absolute masterpiece, when I first saw it and, it went from happy to absolute terror I doubted that am actually watching a different movie I had to rewatch it over and over ..can't get enough of it

If u notice every time u see someone going to Kim's house, they have to go downwards or from a slope road and when u have to go to Park's house u have to go upwards. It is used to showcase the difference between them. Another thing is that creater have made the windows so special that it seems like the two house are facing each other. The creators have used the architecture in a perfect way to creat a image of poor and rich within us For example - Bong Joon Ho wanted to use sunlight as a way to illustrate the better life of upper class. They're higher up in society, higher up physically and therefore closer to sun too. So the first shot where we see sun itself on screen is when Ki-woo from lower class Kim family, acends a staircase towards the Park family's house. This is so blured in the beautiful storyline and moreover these details don't even seem fabricated.

Towards the end when the son is talking about how the reporters follow them around he is putting up flyers from the pizza place. He went through all that just to end up working right where he started, at the bottom. The movie is a masterpiece I cannot express that enough!!!!

I don’t know what this movie did to me, but when Jessica was stabbed i just understood what being stabbed to the heart feels like, this movie changed my mindset for good.

I thought it was also interesting how Moon-gwang referred to Choong-sook as a “sister” due to them having the same position and once she sees they are imposters she takes it back and deems herself a higher class/above her

One thing I noticed is how throughout the movie, they kept bringing up the theme of 'plans'. They kept asking the father what his plan was. He never gave an answer. He even told his son his plan is to not have any plan at all. At the end of the movie though, right before he entered the basement - he says he finally knew what he had to do.
I feel there a theme coming out here is how plans can rise or fall based on the class you are born in. While the Parks seemed to be in control of the plans they had and made, the plans of the Kims literally kept taking them further down than they were before. The only plan that seemed to work was at the end when the dad finally knew what he had to do - go into the basement.
I think this really sums up the sad reality of what goes on in the world today. For a lot of people, their plans never seem to work. Partly because they don't have plans or because their plans get drowned by the system. At the end of the day the plan that seems to work out for most - is staying where they are, or going further down ultimately hiding from the world, robbing the world of ever seeing the true greatness they have.

When Kevin accidentally tripped on the stairs in the basement, causing his dad and sister to fall down with him, this triggered all the events at the house and flood in the Kim’s house (they couldn’t get back in time to stop the flood). Similarly, Kevin also triggered the events at the party where he decided to go down into the basement and accidentally let the husband out.

Did anyone notice that the order of those light buttons in the bunker is opposite to the actual alignment of the lights on the stairs. The lights rise up like stairs but the buttons order is downwards.
